Floor grinding and surface preparation
We open up the concrete surface with a floor grinder and remove weak layers and contaminants so the coating bonds firmly.
Much of the result of an epoxy floor is decided before coating begins. Laitance, dust, oil, old paint or loose material on the concrete surface weaken the bond of the coating.
Grinding opens up the surface mechanically, removes these layers and lets the primer penetrate the concrete. Dust is then removed, cracks and voids are repaired and a suitable primer is applied.
What does surface preparation involve?
The moisture, soundness and contamination of the floor are assessed on site. The surface is opened up by grinding or another suitable mechanical method and vacuumed with an industrial vacuum. Cracks, joints and voids are filled with suitable repair materials. These steps are planned to meet the requirements of the chosen coating system.

Prices are average ranges including materials and labour. They vary with the condition of the floor, surface preparation, area size, colour choice and location. A firm price is given in a written quote after the site has been seen.
Questions about grinding and surface preparation
How is the floor prepared before application?
The moisture, soundness and contamination of the floor are assessed. The surface is opened up by grinding or another mechanical method, dust is removed, cracks and voids are repaired and a primer is applied. Surface preparation directly affects how well the coating bonds.
Can epoxy be applied to newly poured concrete straight away?
Usually not. The concrete must reach sufficient dryness and strength first. The waiting time depends on the concrete, its thickness and site conditions. We measure floor moisture before deciding.
Can a new coating be applied over old epoxy or painted floors?
If the existing coating is well bonded, it can be sanded, cleaned and recoated in suitable cases. Blistered, peeling or weak coatings must be removed first. The decision is made after inspecting the floor on site.
